Buzzard Bylines 1975
- Sylvia Phelps
The Lord has kept me at Walter Reed for nearly two years. It's been
both a learning and growing experience. Perhaps the thing that excites me
most at this time is the many, many opportunities He's given me to
share Christ--whether it be with the doctors at work or with a group of
Buddhists at one of their "prayer meetings" or with an adult
SS class at a Congregational Church (many of whom are unsaved). I covet
your prayers and would love to hear from you.
- Deb & Paul Haken
We were commissioned on Feb. 16 and left for the field Feb. 17. Because
our visa had not yet arrived from Nigeria and there is a great need for
pilots in Niger, we will be serving there for an indefinite period of time.
Pray that we will adjust quickly to one of the hottest countries in the
world and to the French language, that all our barrels arrive safely,
and that our Nigerian visa will come so that we can, in time, fill the need
in that place.
- Steve Fields
The Lord has been so good and has brought me under a very good teaching
pastor who has been a great help in growing in the Word. I am learning
to repair electric meters, working on my black belt in Kung Fu and teaching
Jr. High SS. Anyone coming this way is welcome to stay over.
- Bob & Vicki Becker
Since we left CBC much has happened. We were summer missionaries with
CEF in '73; then I worked a while in a shoe factory. Since last May we
have been pastoring a C&MA church in Shippensburg, PA. We thoroughly
love the work. Vicki will soon be meeting with one of the women for
personal Bible study, Scripture memorization, etc. I have been meeting
with a guy weekly for Bible study and hand-bell. We would appreciate
prayer for: consistency in our devotional life; victory over temptations;
physical strength and stamina; strengthening of leadership in courage,
faith and vision; unity; five personal Bible studies this year. Would
love to hear from you.
- Steven Parrish
I am working at THE Hess station, which has paid off my car and will
provide for a start on my M.A. in Bible; I will be starting at Bob Jones U
in June. From there the course is open 2 ways: either to the mission
field directly or a Ph.D., then the field. So much to so, and so little time!
- Tricia & Dan Miller
We are enjoying the beautiful hills of Va. Dan is working in construction
along with his father. I have a job as a secretary at the U. of Va.
Hospital, in the division for child abuse and neglect. We are looking
forward to SIL training this summer. Dan hopes to soon use his skills as
a pilot/mechanic in JAARS. Pray that we will be learning and open to all the
Lord has to teach us this year.
- Marlita & Bill Walker
In Oct. Bill became assoc. pastor and director of Christian Ed. at
1st Baptist of Plainwell and is busy: Weds. night Bible study
with teens; teaching Life of Paul in SS; organizing Weds. night family
groups; getting the bus ministry into full swing, and others. I'm working
at Kalamazoo Savings and Loan as teaching jobs are scarce and I need to
get 1 1/2 more years of schooling. I'm in the choir and sub. teaching in SS
and have started a jr. as well as teen choir. We're renting a huge 3
bedroom house, so if you're in Mi. we'll be hurt if you don't stop
and see us.
- Keith Wigley
After 5 mos. at home in Al., various experiences and not being led
into a university there, I've returned to Columbia and am praying over
and looking into various schools. I am very interested in the field of
physical therapy but am not sure in that is what the Lord wants, and if so,
where. Pray that I'll have His wisdom and know His way. I'm also looking
for a job here.
- Gene & Bonnie Ward
I'm teaching fourth grade at Cola. Christian and working on my M.in
Ed. at USC. So far I love it. Bonnie has finished at CBC and is now
working for the State until I finish school, which hopefully will be in
little over a year.
- Al & Daisy Ortiz
We left for the field in Aug. without full financial support but with
full confidence on God's ability to supply. After 2 mos. of field
orientation and visitation, we held our first service in our house-church.
We had 29 visitors, but most of them well-wishers. However, we do have 3
believing families, fresh, vital contacts that will become "bridges
for God" and for us as we work to establish a church in a very
difficult surging middle-class area--engrossed in materialism.
- Larry Allen
I am working with Civil Service at the Pentagon and entertaining the
idea of a Masters degree.
- Vicki & Grady Merritt
Benjamin Grady arrived Nov. 1; Grady was out-of-work Nov. 27-Jan. 13 so
took the opportunity to attend CBC's short quarter and really enjoyed
his two courses under Rev. Burchett. Dec. 8 I had emergency surgery for
a staph infection breast abscess, followed by a month out-patient care and
recovery. The Lord provided abundantly financially, physically and
spiritually and Benjamin continues to be happily breastfed. After temporary
work at Cola. Christian School, G. is back to carpentry, working on
a shopping center. We didn't have the Lord's peace about USC, and Grady
has continued in his apprenticeship program. We are very involved with
the local church; G. teaching college & career SS and I am librarian.
I also am secretary/treasurer for the Cola. area alumni chapter. Benj.
is active and keeps us both hopping.
Second-hand news:
- Lee Watson was married Mar. 1 to Mary Ellen
Dilcher, in Lake Worth, Fla. He plans to enter seminary in TN in the fall.
- Deb Bayuszik and Peter Jones are planning a late
Aug. wedding. Her year + in Italy has provided a very varied ministry
and has been blessed by the Lord.
- Al & Cindy Bosson were facing a
transition stage in Aug. They did
not feel it was God's will to continue with Capernwray full-time there
in New Zealand but would like to work with them part-time. Allan's father
is not at all antagonistic to Christianity as he was, but does not
understand yet, that is in Christ, not "giving up" which
he is unwilling to do at present.
- Cliff & Jayne Moore now have a daughter named
Heather. Cliff was laid off work so Jayne is back at the hospital while
Cliff is "mother and housekeeper."
- Donny & Beth Smith are both teaching school
in Miami: she first grade and he 7th-10th grade
Bible, in a private school. He is also full-time youth pastor at
Alapatah Bapt. Church.
- Al & Claudia Pearce have a new son, Timothy
Edward, born Nov. 25.
- Pam & Fred Tuggy are in Mexico City, where
Fred is helping install a heating system for Wycliffe. They will be
there until this summer. They are expecting their second child in June/July.
